What to Expect Before, During, and After Cataract Surgery

Cataract surgery is a common and effective procedure to restore vision loss. If you’re thinking about cataract surgery, knowing the process can calm your worries and make sure you’re ready for each step.

At SightMD, we promise to give our patients all the info and help they need for a successful cataract surgery.

Before Surgery: Initial Consultation and Preparation

Initial Cataract Consultation

Your eye doctor will perform a full eye exam to assess the severity of your cataracts and check the health of your eyes. This exam will include a thorough evaluation of your eyes. The purpose is to determine the extent of your cataracts and ensure the overall health of your eyes.

During this consultation, discuss the medications you are currently taking and your medical history. This should include any past eye surgeries or conditions you have experienced.

Together you’ll discuss the types of intraocular lenses (IOLs) available. Options include monofocal, multifocal, and toric lenses, each designed to meet different vision needs.

Pre Cataract Surgery Instructions

Before your surgery, your doctor may recommend discontinuing certain medications. Additionally, you might receive a prescription for antibiotic or anti-inflammatory eye drops to use before the procedure. Your doctor will advise you not to consume any food or beverages for several hours prior to the surgery.

Arrange for a driver to take you to the surgery center because your vision will be temporarily impacted. Similarly, ensure that you have a driver arranged to take you back home from the surgery center.

During Cataract Surgery

Arrival and Preparation

On the day of the surgery, you will check in at the surgical center. Staff will check your medical info and answer any last questions you have. You will get numbing medicine for your eye and maybe a sedative to help you relax during the procedure.

The Surgery

The surgeon will create a tiny incision in your eye to remove the clouded lens. This procedure is commonly performed using ultrasound energy to break up the cataract. Afterwards a new intraocular lens gets inserted to replace the removed lens. The incision usually seals on its own, eliminating the need for stitches.

Post-Surgery Recovery

Following the surgery, you will spend a brief period in recovery. Your doctor will examine your eye and give you protective eyewear. You will be provided with comprehensive post-operative instructions and eye drops to prevent infection and minimize inflammation.

After Surgery: Recovery and Follow-Up

Immediate Aftercare

We highly recommend that you take the rest of the day to relax at home. Avoid engaging in any strenuous activities and use the eye shield to protect your eye from irritants.

Follow the instructions closely for applying the prescribed eye drops. This will help healing and prevent infections. Your dedication to these guidelines will be essential in guaranteeing a smooth and successful recovery.

Follow-Up Appointments

After your surgery, you will have a check-up the next day to make sure your eye is healing properly. After your first appointment, you will have more appointments in the following weeks to check your progress and adjust your treatment plan as needed. This process is important for your healing and to make any necessary changes to your treatment plan quickly.

Long-Term Care

After undergoing the procedure, numerous patients experience enhanced vision within a short span of a few days. However, it is common for the full stabilization of your vision to require a few weeks. Follow your doctor’s advice on activities to avoid during recovery. This may include not lifting heavy objects or bending over.

Wait until your eye is fully healed before resuming these activities. This cautious approach is essential for ensuring a successful and smooth recovery process.
