LASEK Eye Surgery at SightMD

At SightMD, we are committed to providing cutting-edge vision correction solutions, including LASEK (Laser-Assisted Sub-Epithelial Keratectomy). LASEK is a well-established refractive surgery designed to treat common vision problems such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. For patients seeking a safe and effective alternative to glasses or contact lenses, LASEK offers an exceptional option.

What is LASEK Eye Surgery?

LASEK combines essential elements of both LASIK and PRK, two well-known laser eye surgeries, to achieve optimal results. During the LASEK procedure, the surgeon meticulously loosens the thin outer layer of the cornea, known as the epithelium, and lifts it to expose the underlying corneal tissue. A specialized excimer laser is then used to reshape the cornea, effectively correcting refractive errors and improving vision. After the laser treatment, the epithelium is repositioned, and a protective contact lens is placed over the eye to facilitate healing.

Benefits of LASEK Eye Surgery

LASEK is an excellent choice for patients with thin corneas or those who may not qualify for LASIK due to corneal thickness. Here are some of the key benefits:

  • Enhanced Vision: LASEK greatly improves vision. It often reduces or even removes the need for glasses or contact lenses.
  • Minimally Invasive: This procedure keeps more of the cornea’s structure intact than LASIK. This makes it a safer choice for some people.
  • Long-Lasting Results: Many patients experience lasting vision improvement after LASEK. They often keep stable vision for years after the surgery.
  • Great for Thin Corneas: LASEK is a good choice for patients who cannot have LASIK because of thin corneas.

LASEK vs. PRK

LASEK (Laser Epithelial Keratomileusis) and PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) are advanced laser eye surgeries designed to correct refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. The key difference lies in how each procedure handles the cornea’s outer layer, the epithelium. In PRK, the epithelium is completely removed before the laser reshapes the corneal tissue, which will regenerate over time. In contrast, LASEK preserves the epithelium by gently lifting it and repositioning it after the laser treatment.

LASEK vs. LASIK

LASEK and LASIK both seek to improve vision, but they employ different techniques to alter the cornea. In LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis), a thin flap of corneal tissue is created and lifted, allowing the laser to reshape the inner cornea before the flap is replaced. On the other hand, LASEK preserves the corneal surface by carefully lifting the epithelial layer without forming a deeper flap. LASEK is often recommended for patients with thinner corneas or those who may not be suitable candidates for LASIK.

What to Expect During Your LASEK Procedure

LASEK is an outpatient procedure performed at our state-of-the-art SightMD locations. The entire process typically takes less than 30 minutes for both eyes, and patients can return home the same day.

Before the procedure, your eye will be numbed with anesthetic drops to ensure comfort. A small alcohol solution is applied to loosen the epithelium. After the epithelium is carefully lifted, the excimer laser is applied to reshape the cornea according to your personalized treatment plan. The laser treatment itself lasts only a few seconds for each eye.

Once the laser has reshaped the cornea, the epithelium is gently repositioned over the treated area. A soft contact lens is placed over the eye to protect the cornea as it heals.

Recovery After LASEK

LASEK requires a slightly longer recovery period compared to LASIK. Most patients experience mild discomfort, which can be managed with eye drops and prescribed medications. The protective contact lens is usually worn for several days to support healing. You might see a slow improvement in your vision during the first week. Full results usually happen within a few months.

Who is a Candidate for LASEK?

You may be a good candidate for LASEK if:

  • You have thin corneas that make LASIK unsuitable.
  • You have mild to moderate myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism.
  • You are in good overall health, with no eye diseases or conditions like keratoconus.
  • You want a safe, effective alternative to glasses or contact lenses.
