LASIK Surgery — The Complete Guide by SightMD

Preparation is important when it comes to LASIK surgery. Preparing yourself for your LASIK recovery before your surgery date not only reduces stress, but reduces risk. Following the recommendations of our LASIK specialists is the best way to ensure a speedy recovery and the best possible long-term results.

While the actual surgery can take as little as fifteen minutes, appointments before LASIK surgery are an important part of the LASIK process. During pre-surgery consultations, our surgeons will thoroughly examine your eyes and evaluate your vision, provide instructions on how to prepare for surgery, and address any questions or concerns that you might have about the procedure. With a procedure like LASIK, it’s crucial to go into it with realistic expectations.

The Day Before LASIK Surgery

In preparation for your LASIK procedure, your surgeon will prescribe antibiotic and anti-inflammatory eye drops. When used as directed, these drops help reduce irritation and minimize the risk of infection before surgery.

All patients must arrange for a ride home following their procedure, as driving is not permitted afterward. Please avoid alcohol consumption the day before surgery, and do not eat or drink anything after midnight unless otherwise instructed. Plan to wear comfortable clothing and make sure to get a full night’s rest before your appointment.

LASIK Pre-Op Instructions

Before arriving at the LASIK center, you will receive instructions to gently clean your eyelids. Please do not wear makeup, lotions, perfumes, or fragrances on the day of surgery, as these can interfere with the procedure.

Arriving for Surgery

Please plan to arrive at our surgery center at least 30 minutes early. After checking in, you will be brought to the pre-operative area where final consent forms will be completed. A mild sedative may be offered to help you relax and remain comfortable throughout the process.

At this time, an updated iDesign® custom eye map will be created. The iDesign system captures a highly detailed map of your unique visual system—much like a fingerprint—allowing for precise, customized laser vision correction. This digital map is transferred directly to the laser system and helps your surgeon deliver the most accurate and personalized treatment possible.

Your LASIK procedure typically takes about 10 minutes. During surgery, you will focus on a blinking fixation light, and while you may feel mild pressure, the procedure is not painful. Our team will guide you through each step and communicate with you throughout the surgery process to ensure you remain comfortable.
